3WEST is excited to present an exhibition of new work by Austin Swearengin titled “Sticks and Stones.” We are all familiar with the age-old saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones,” used mainly by children to express the inability to physically hurt others with words. There is a slightly lesser-known quote by Albert Einstein, “I know not what World War III will be fought with, but World War IV will be sticks and stones.” It is with this same playfulness and intensity that Swearengin approached the works for this exhibition. Sticks and stones both literally and metaphorically permeate each sculpture, developing an in-depth study of the materiality and symbolism of these objects.
